See You Soon!

Wow- time flies—the Mother-Baby and Neonatal conferences are next week! I don’t know about you, but after an earthquake and a hurricane, I’m definitely ready for some sightseeing and relaxation. Here’s my final list of favorite places—feel free to leave a comment or track me down at the conference if you would like additional recommendations.

We’re going to see the Capitol Building. What else can we do around there?
Capitol Hill is a great neighborhood! Try Spike’s Good Stuff Eatery for lunch (a former Top Chef contestant, Spike Mendelsohn, owns and runs it) and while you’re there take a stroll through historic Eastern Market. The indoor food market is open everyday, and on weekends the streets fill with arts and crafts vendors, too; perfect for souvenirs!

What else is there to see near the Smithsonian Museums?
The Bureau of Engraving and Printing is fascinating! September is actually part of the “off” season so no tickets are required and admission is free. On the tour, you can see US currency fresh off the printing press and explore one of the most unique gift shops in the area.

Which memorials are the best?
That’s a tough one! Many people prefer to go where they have a personal connection, like the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial. Another one of my favorites, visually, is the Navy Memorial, located adjacent to the National Archives (and just steps from the nearest Metro station: Archives/Navy Memorial).

If you’ve been on social networking sites this week, you’ve probably seen the footage of the Old Guard sentinels at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery. The tomb guards have a shelter but during Hurricane Irene (as well as last year’s record-setting blizzards) declined to use it and continued their march, 24/7, at the tomb. See the ritual for yourself when you come; the cemetery is just a short Metro ride away.

Are there any green spaces in DC?
Rock Creek Park is probably the best well-known. At over 2,800 acres, Rock Creek is more than three times the size of New York’s Central Park and features horseback riding, biking trails and a golf course. On the other side of town, a new park was just built on the banks of the Anacostia River: Yards Park. The large fountain, waterfall and wading pool there are relaxing places to spend an afternoon. You can take Metro to either location.

I hope some of my favorites have helped you come up with a fabulous to-do list for your trip to the city next week. I just know you’re going to have a great time here. Travel safely, and I’ll see you soon!
